Types of Wood
Wood types are subject to availability. Please feel free to enquire about
our other African Hard Woods. All our raw materials are ethically and responsibly sourced.
AFRICAN MAHOGANY
This is an exotic hardwood. The grain is straight to interlocked, with a medium to coarse texture. The colour can range from a pale pink or muted orange, to a darker reddish/golden-brown often appearing as a series of ribbon-like light and dark bands. It can also have darker striping. The colour tends to darken with age. It generally has a good natural lustre.
BLACKWOOD
The name “Blackwood” is deceiving as this wood is not black at all. The range of colours in Blackwood makes it a wood that is always different and full of surprises. The colour can vary from brown, gold, straw, yellow, caramel to grey-white with clear to dark brown grain with dark-brown growth rings. The timber is generally straight grained but may be wavy. A smooth, polished finish can be achieved, making blackwood ideal for furniture.
BUBINGA
This tree is found across equatorial Africa. Trees can grow to towering heights, so the larger specimens are perfect for live-edge slabs. There are many species of Bubinga, so colours and aesthetics can vary dramatically. It has a stunning grain with the base colour ranging from a lighter pinkish red to light-medium-brown.
KIAAT
One of the most common timbers indigenous to Southern Africa (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa). The attractive light brownish-yellow wood is stable during drying and polishes well. Its heartwood colour can vary from a light golden brown to a medium brown with a reddish or purplish tint. Grains can be straight, wavy or interlocked. Its texture ranges from fine to medium, with a nice natural lustre.
MATUMI
Matumi is a fairly fast-growing evergreen tree that grows to a height of 41m. The trunk can reach 2.06m in diameter which makes it ideal for large live-edge table slabs. It is a hard, heavy, durable wood with colour ranging from yellow to light brown and is frequently blotched. The bark is grey brown in colour and although it breaks up into irregular ridges it does not peel off which adds plenty of character to the slabs.
OAK
Oak is incredibly strong, heavy and durable wood. It is generally straight-grained and has an uneven texture with a prominent grain. There can be a fair amount of variation in the colour of this wood, ranging from an attractive light colour to medium reddish-brown colour. Oak tends to subtly darken with age to become a richer golden shade.
YELLOWWOOD
Yellowwood is an even-grained, South African wood. It mostly has a straight grain although it can occasionally be wavy. Its texture is fine and consistent, with a nice natural lustre. Both the heartwood and sapwood are yellow to straw-coloured, darkening to ochre with exposure.
OREGON
Oregon Pine, although classed as a soft wood, is one of the strongest softwoods for its weight. The wood colour can vary from a light tan to a medium brown, with a yellow, orange or even a reddish tint. It has a straight regular grain but can vary from straight to wavy to irregular with thick knots that add authenticity and character to any piece crafted from its wood. All our Oregon Pine is authentic, original, reclaimed wood.

Table Legs
We offer a variety of leg and table base options. For a more contemporary look you can choose from our custom range of designs in powder coated mild steel. If you prefer something a bit more traditional, we can also do matching wooden bases in various hardwoods.
Our metal legs and wood bases are sized to be proportionate to the length, width and thickness of your chosen slab. We are also able to accommodate any specific height preferences based on existing chairs to be used.

The Live Edge
Production
All of our products are hand finished by our team of experienced and skilled artisans. They love what they do and work with passion to produce your “ONE OF A KIND” unique piece that will way exceed your expectations.
The wood for our products is sourced from various parts of Africa. All our slabs are transported to our factory where they are taken from their raw state and crafted and prepared for retail. From here they are transported to one of our three showrooms around Cape Town.

Local & International Shipping
Our Live Edge tables are shipped locally as well as internationally. Locally shipped tables are transported to your residence and reassembled with the legs in the area you want it to be. This greatly eases the process of trying to transport and assemble yourself. Many of our pieces are acquired by international clients who know and appreciate the beauty of the one of a kind live edge creations. We handle the shipping to anywhere in the world.
